Ham Radio Question and Answer on StackExchange

There is a great little Ham Radio community just getting started at http://ham.stackexchange.com/.

If you are a programmer, you know about www.stackoverflow.com, a site that is absolutely wonderful for asking and answering questions about programming.  Well, there's now a StackExchange site for everything under the sun.  Math?   Check. Science Fiction. Check.   Ham Radio? Of course!

How can I get adequate lightning protection for my G5RV or dipole sloped antenna?

The answer was not what I expected. I thought that perhaps multiple ground paths, including a lighting rod would help.   One of the answers even has a nice circuit diagram drawn up on the spot by the person answering.

My first real QSOs. Very fine business.

I made some more of my first real QSOs where you either call CQ or you answer someone's CQ.  I've now made a few on 20 meters, 40 meters, and one on 15 meters.   I've talked to a couple folks in Bulgaria, a couple in Russia, one guy in Guam, and a couple around North America.

Tonight I talked to two nice guys from Texas, one near Dallas/Fort Worth, and one near Santa Fe.  I really enjoyed talking to these guys because they weren't just "59, thanks for the QSO, 73s", we actually chatted a bit, and talked for a few minutes.  The second one was over half an hour.  I quite like longer QSOs, rather than the short hurried ones. I like it if someone asks a question or two and if I ask a question or two, and we can politely get to know a bit about each other's interests, lives, and activities, either within or outside of the hobby.

Part of the "Amateur Code" that I like very much and intend very much to honor is that I don't think that On The Air QSOs are a good place for "ranting", or intemperate or intolerant behaviour.  Courtesy rules.   I like getting on the air and engaging in a courteous QSO.   It may seem like a remnant of a by-gone era.  Courtesy still rules, around here, and I'm glad it's popular in the hobby.

ITAR: International Traffice in Arms Regulations (US) that threatens US Amateurs who engage in Satellite design projects, may be relaxed

Did you know that until now, satellites were weapons, under an important US law, and that Amateurs working with other Amateurs around the world could go to jail or face six figure fines for working collaboratively with other Amateurs on Amateur Satellite projects?

I only heard about this because of an article on www.southgatearc.org which mentions the easing of these restrictions.

The American law International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) classified all satellites, even amateur radio ones, as being in effect, a weapon.   

The fear that this kind of law is built upon is not hard to understand. Remember sputnik? The USSR launched a tiny radio beacon into space, and the space-race was on.   America lost the "first satellite" and "first astronaut in orbit" races, but I'd say they have lots of later victories to salve the wound. It's odd that in 2014, as a law that seems rather touched by a cold-war mentality may now be relaxed, and yet, as we watch the world around us, and the aggressive expansion by the Russian Federation into Crimea is also in the news, and Putin seems committed to reviving the USSR, a bit at a time, I wonder if the cold war may be coming back our way.

It's a strange, strange world we live in.

Happy 100th Birthday to the ARRL.

Today is exactly the 100th birthday of the ARRL, the world's first national level organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, hobby, and public service aspects of Amateur Radio, founded on this day, 100 years ago.  It was not the first local amateur radio club, or even probably the first regional amateur radio association, but it was certainly an important force in the creation and preservation of what we today know as the Amateur Radio hobby, and its early executive members were pretty important in the formation of the international IARU, and in representing Amateur interests at the ITU, and before the FCC.  If there were no Amateur Bands in the USA, there wouldn't be the hobby that the rest of us, out here in Canada, and in Europe, and around the world, enjoy today.

Now I know not everybody is a big fan of the ARRL. The late Wayne Green, founder and editor of "73" magazine was a famous provocateur in his editorial columns, often coming out against the ARRL whenever he could, at any angle he could manage, most often, if my reading is correct, in the 1960s and 1970s, when, according to many old-time Hams I've conversed with, the ARRL was in a bit of a rut.  You could say, that a kick in the pants is still a step forward, and that the ARRL's critics have helped make the ARRL a better place.  So thanks, Wayne, for your little part in that.

I joined the ARRL when I got my license, even though I'm a Canadian, 90% because I like the QST magazine.  I also subscribe to CQ magazine, which is the other major Ham magazine. I read both magazines online.   I got a free membership in RAC when I got my license for one year, and I'll probably renew that membership too. I think organizations like RAC (in Canada) and ARRL (in the USA) are an important part of keeping the hobby ticking over well, fighting against RFI and spectrum licensing encroachments on ham bands,  and representing amateur opinions and ideas at the legislative table.   We live in a society governed by laws, and shared resources like the RF spectrum are not going to be carved up endlessly in our favor if we don't organize ourselves and represent ourselves and put our best foot forward. No matter how much you like or don't like the ARRL, consider that a healthy ARRL is the most powerful organization of hams in the world, and that by in-fighting, bickering, and complaining, you're only shooting yourself in your own foot.  So enough of considering the critics.  Be off with ye.  Back to the Happy Birthday bit.

Here are my top five favorite ARRL things;

1. QST, my favorite place to find project ideas, product reviews, and other stuff like that.

2. The 2014 edition of the Amateur Handbook, is a special centennial edition, and is perhaps the best (and heaviest) edition I've seen yet. It's getting to be more an Encyclopaedia than a Handbook, but that's a nice problem to have, in my opinion.

3. The Antenna book.   I've only read a loaned copy, haven't bought my own yet, but this is next on my to-acquire list of cool things that I've seen from the ARRL.

4. The large membership base gives it a voice at the table not just in the USA but around the world.  This benefits me (here in Canada) and you, wherever you are, if you care about this hobby.

5. It's been a long, strange trip. I'm a History buff, I'm interested in the History of Everything and I like the historical record that the ARRL has provided. An Elmer (mentor) loaned me a bound volume of QST magazines from 1976, which I have been enjoying looking through.  In 1976 people were buying channelized 2 meter FM rigs with plug-in crystals.   Collins was still around as a brand-name belonging to Rockwell, which was in turn acquired by Motorola.  There was very little evidence in 1976 that the microcomputer revolution was having any effect on the ham radio world, other than that HAL Communications Company would sell you an Intel 8080 single-board computer, if you wanted one.  I like the old ads for Collins transceivers,because this is an ad for a rig that has the very finest 1950s tech slightly warmed over for 1976, but with zero effort to even be up to date for 1976.  Did Collins ever fit an internal LCD frequency display to one of their rigs? I'd like to see it, if they did.

Heathkit tube powered multimeter




I got a heathkit two tube multimeter, which has a lovely simpson analog meter and two tubes inside. It tickles me to no end that this thing is still ticking over beautifully but that the five or so multimeters I have owned until now, digital no-name units one and all, have died various ignominious deaths.

That Duracell just went in there today replacing a Mallory cell from the 70s.


The sticker on the battery says someone paid 35 cents for this at Eatons.  

A network of resistors on a multiplanar rotary dial switch forms the heart of the instrument. I imagine a father and son building this in a basment in East York circa 1965 then going to the corner store for a cold bottle of Coca Cola in the original glass bottles.


A sense of accomplishment, a father son bonding moment. A feeling that you have in your hands an instrument, a means of measurement, a suitable trusty bit of kit for any radio or TV repairman.

Building an SDR Kit Project: The Lil Pup build, by PARC Homebrew

One of the reasons why I was interested in the Ham Radio Hobby is because of the strong "homebrew" contingent within the hobby. I just like it when people will fire up their brains, and their soldering irons, and build stuff.  And I want to learn how to do that too.  A good step towards that goal is to start doing kit builds, and to practice and improve my soldering skills, along with my ability to read and understand some fairly simple circuit schematics, and test and diagnose problems if my build goes awry.

I signed up for a BuildAThon day with the Peel Amateur Radio Club (PARC), who are a really fun bunch of folks. I joined the PARC club, paid my dues, and signed up for a slot at the buildathon day. I obtained a soldering station, two actually, used, at a low price.  I bought all the items on the "suggested things to bring" list, and I showed up at the buildathon day.

I have to take a moment to express my gratitude to the wonderful folks who put this build together. Here is a quick list of the kind of jobs that go into this kind of build:

* Select a project that is interesting enough, but not too difficult for your group (They hit this one out of the park in my opinion: Build an HF SDR? How cool is that!)

* Obtain all the parts and put together the kits (This was done very very well)

* Write the documentation  (This part was done amazingly well)

* Obtain the necessary shared equipment, in this case, a reflow oven, a drill press, test equipment, and extra soldering stations.

This is all done by volunteers. This is why Amateur Radio Clubs are so great.  I'm so impressed by the HomeBrew group within the club, and with the PARC club all around. Well done, gentlemen, well done.

Anyways,  here's a picture of me, and a picture of My Thing Which I Built, and I Think Is Really Neat-O:


Here is a close up of the board, which is populated with surface mount coils, resistors, capacitors, one RF mixer IC, a 155 mhz oscillator, a voltage regulator, and a couple of diodes:



Underneath the board you can see is a small pre-made assembly which is the inside of an "RTL-SDR dongle", the 50 mhz to 1.2 ghz SDR "brains" of the operation. The green board on top is an upconverter that slides a segment of the RF spectrum from 1 to 80 mhz up to 125 mhz where the Realtek RTL-SDR chip can 'see' it.

The upconverter design is an open hardware design from opendous.org, and the design was modified, and placed in a cool "Altoids tin" which, when closed up, makes a nice little enclosure.   I am a big fan of ersatz kit enclosures, whether they be mint tins, or tuna tins, or what have you.

I don't think I could have built this kind of kit, even if I purchased the board and the components in a big bag of stuff. I had a little trouble with the reflow, the oven didn't really get hot enough and there wasn't enough solder/paste on the right side of the board, so I needed a bit of help from a more experienced solderer to rework the right side of the board. You can see there is more solder over there because it was hand-soldered, whereas the left side seems to have reflowed properly.


This is big fun, people, I highly recommend kit building, especially "kit building as a team sport". This was a really fun day, and I am now highly motivated to go try building a few kits on my own time, now that I've had a taste of kit-building success.  The best part? My little radio works. There will be a post or two later when I've figured out enough software stuff to be able to show something new. I have some ideas, and since I'm a pretty able software developer, I think I might be able to do some nifty stuff with this little rig.

Hobby Metric: Big Grins Per Day (BGPD)

I'm sitting here listening in and chiming in now and then, on 40 meters.  I have a big grin on my face, and a microphone in my hand, and an HF rig warming up the room.  This is really big fun. This is why I got into this hobby in the first place.  I like radios. I like people.  Bingo.

I went to another hamfest today, and got a Signalink (Sound card interface) and tonight I made my first PSK (digital) contact, using PSK63, which is similar to PSK31 but wider bandwidth, using FLDIGI.
If you don't know what those are, and you're interested, Google it.   There are some great youtube videos introducing Signalink, PSK modes, and the FLDIGI program.

This is REALLY awesome. I'm grinning from ear to ear.

Cheap Crap, and the Zen of Personal Responsibility

Preamble: I beg your indulgence as I go off on a not-very-ham-radio-related tangent.  I will bring this back to relevance to the ham radio hobby, though. Some readers will immediately see the relevance to the Amateur Radio hobby, though, because they are smart people.


I am 44 and I think I might be turning into Allie Fox, the character from Paul Theroux novel The Mosquito Coast. If you have not seen the movie, you have at least definitely run into Allie Fox at HamFests, or on the air on 40 meter rag-chewing on a Saturday night. He's the one complaining about how America has let herself get run down, and let everyone else get the better of her.  He drives a 1950s Ford Pickup truck, he could repair that truck even if the whole world went away and he was left to his own devices, and he's a bit of a stickler for buying Made in America, and prone to ranting about the cheap crap we have everywhere.

Today,  I was trying to fix some dining room chairs that had been given to us for free, that were made at least partially of hardwood, probably walnut. They date from the mid 1970s, I’m guessing, and are constructed of parts that laminate a quarter inch of solid wood onto some kind of engineered substance, that once was sawdust and glue.  Particleboard.    Did you shudder as I used that word?

Particleboard is what us non-wood-tech people call it, and these days, it’s known as an engineered wood product by those who wish to avoid the negative connotations that the term particleboard gives.  The legs are fastened on using the same kind of dowels that everything from Ikea is constructed with, and with a daub of glue.  Guess what happens to those legs as soon as a tiny amount of sheer-angle force is applied? The glue lets go, and you have a wobbly leg, and eventually you break the dowels and the legs fall off, and the person, perhaps of above average girth, falls on the ground.   

So, after grumbling about what cheap crap the free chairs are, and trying for a while to fix them, breaking all my drills and screws,  I migrated to grumbling about what cheap crap the screws and drill bits I was using are.   Everything was cheap crap, even if it was free to me and owed me nothing, being 40 years old, and all. Everyone was at fault, everyone but me.


I heard myself ranting, and caught myself.  We have, as a nation, as a society, as the affluent segment of the modern world, chosen to favor the big-box stores over the mom and pop stores, which in turn leads to some economic processes, which leads inexorably to the death of the small businesses that carried products they were familiar with, and could tell you something about.  Instead, we have advanced chair substitutes, advanced substitutes for a 3 inch One-Eighth-inch diameter wood screw that look like a wood screw, but are made as cheaply as possible and which break off with the 5 pounds of torque it takes to turn a wood screw into a piece of laminate partial-hardwood-and-partial-particleboard.   

The thing is that if I had drilled proper guide and pilot holes before I began, the screw wouldn't have broken. If I had been more patient and set up a jig, the drill bit wouldn't have broken.  

But here I am on Good Friday with all the stores closed, and no cheap crap drill bits for sale, and what do I rant about?  About someone else's responsibilities,  not my own.  What's the one thing I can do something about? About me.  About how I live, about how I act, and about how I treat people.  If I am good, the world becomes better. If am not good, the world becomes worse.   I believe that this is at the heart of the Amateur hobby.  Do good, and have a bit of fun while doing good, and everybody wins.   


   I think that people should start taking personal responsibility for the quality of their wood, their hardware and basic supplies, and their food, the items they use for work and for hobbies, and the financial livelihoods. 

But it's more than that; I think that people, especially and only me,  should care even more about hearts and minds, and about taking good care of people, and being good people, even more than they care about the quality of the two-by-fours in their lumber yards. You see that lumber yard is run by a person, or a couple people. People who may have families, spouses, and children. People who are people just like you and me.   Even what you see as commercial, has a human side to it.    It is the human side to this economic situation that I think is the most important thing.

So, the part where Allie Fox is dead wrong is the part where he starts being a xenophobic racist jerk.    I think we can take personal responsibility for our financial and commercial behaviours and the resulting effects of those decisions on the world, without any xenophobia, racism, protectionism,  nor any of that "My Country Right or Wrong" crap. 

I heard someone who wanted to buy a radio, say, that they don’t want to buy any “cheap rice cracker brand” radios.  That was a jab at the Japanese, who with brands like Kenwood, Yaesu, and ICOM, basically own a huge amount of the radio transceiver market these days. 

 To these folks, perhaps, a Collins all-tube radio from the 1960s, a marvel of RF engineering for its time, and still a solid and fun device to use, and their first radio in high school, has a special place in their hearts. Fine. Good.  All praise to the Collins fans, but don’t go dumping on Kenwood, Yaesu, and Icom, please.  And please no racist insults about Asian people, products, or companies.   I happen to have immense respect for the big-three Japanese radio brands.  You want to know why they're so big? Because there are a lot of people in the amateur radio community in Japan.  Frankly I think that's awesome.  I hope to visit Japan some day, and maybe get to know a few Japanese hams on the air.  Maybe I'll learn some Japanese.   I am not one of those people who thinks that North American English Speaking People are Better than Everybody Else. I think Allie Fox thinks that though.  Allie Fox rips himself off when he refuses to be friends with the rest of the good people of the world.

Anyways, back to my point about buying locally without being xenophobic or racist.
Let's look at the Ham Radio market.   Collins is gone. Heathkit is gone.  Hallicrafters is gone.  The remaining American brands have carved out some pretty respectable engineering accomplishments this century.  Elecraft, FlexRadio, and Ten-Tec come to mind as makers of some amazing radios that I would love to own.  But inside those radios are integrated circuits made in the same fabs that the radios from Kenwood, Yaesu, and ICOM are using.     You can wind your own coils, and you can wave-solder your own boards, and America still has some claim to fame in the engineering of ferrite materials, but the semiconductor business is totally global.  

We live in a world where the high-tech elements of our society are possible only through a global peaceful network of trade.   Xenophobia, and fear of “foreign made” stuff is so last century.   Let's be fans of American radio companies (and Canadian ones too) without being negative about anybody else's products.

So what am I suggesting? I’m suggesting that each and every person ask themselves the question, “what kind of world do I want to live in, and how do my decisions affect the creation or destruction of the things that I wish to see strengthened, or weakened?”.   I think it’s possible, for example, to live in a global trade ecosystem, without always choosing to go down the Big Box Store route.  By Big Box Stores I mean not only WalMart, but also Ebay, and Amazon.  One company or organization having a shocking amount of control over what I buy seems to me to be a bad thing.  I want diversity of options and choices about what to buy, and from whom.  I want to buy stuff locally when there are local knowledgeable suppliers.
A great example of what I mean, in the Ham Radio hobby, is that there are a few makers and distributors and retailers of antennas and other radio gear located right near me (within 100 kilometres).  If I always buy online and rely on cheap international shipping to obtain what I want, those stores, and those businesses will not survive.

A second example of what I mean, an attitude that I think is present in the Ham community, that the wider world needs to learn a bit more of, is the old-school Yankee Ingenuity, often present in non-Yankees like my Dad and (some day maybe) in me, the desire to know how things work, how to fix them when they break, and to be able to shift for yourself if you have to, because sometimes, you do.  Knowing how something works, and taking responsibility for fixing it, that is step one for me.  Step two is to do it without grumbling and complaining about “who designed this awful crap?”.   How about just saying, “well it looks like that would take this much force to break, and it got that, and it broke, so now what?”.  Pragmatic, kindly, and results-oriented. Forward looking, instead of whining.   Creative and curious and happy instead of resentful, and unhappy. 

Now that I own my own rig (a Kenwood TS-570D) I will soon return the borrowed Kenwood to the kind Ham who loaned it to me.  I bought myself a  Kenwood because I like how the radio is designed and controlled.  Kenwood makes some fantastic rigs, and if I could afford a new one, I would buy one, or a new Elecraft K3 or a TenTec Eagle, but I can't afford any of the big brand prices yet. But now that I have a rig, I need a lot of stuff to go with it, and I will frequent my local ham shops, and antenna makers.  I bought a G5RV from Maple Leaf Communications, and I heartily recommend them to anybody looking for antennas.  Bob is a great guy, and makes great stuff, and knows a lot about his products.  If you're reading this and you're in the Canada or the USA, check out your local dealers, makers, and sources. If you don't, they will eventually go out of business, and who are you going to ask for advice?  If that shiny new rig costs $100 less online, consider the loss to the community if the local dealer can't keep his rent paid anymore, and has to close up shop.  Keep the hobby fun, by keeping the hobby shops around.

As another aspect of personal responsibility (combined with fun), I will homebrew and learn maintenance and repair of the electronics I own. As another part of doing good and having fun while doing good; I will be part of a community I will try to whine a lot less, and be positive a lot more.  If something breaks that doesn't make it crap, or anybody a bad person. So it broke. Just fix it.

I will not turn into Allie Fox.   If you want to, go ahead. I'll just go QSY or flip my radio off, and ignore you.

I bought a used radio. One day later it's dead.

This sure can be an expensive hobby some times.

(I'm a little depressed, you might suppose, and you'd be right.)

Total operating time, 3.8 minutes. Total cost $525.  Total cost of ownership, $138 per minute.

Better luck next time.

Update: In the morning, by suggestion of someone from the local club, I unplugged and replugged the speaker lead in three times, and the third time cleared whatever little metal bit was shorted or stuck before. Now I have audio again.   Besides having a meltdown and feeling a bit shaky, I'm fine, and my radio is fine.   That was not fun.

Putting up a G5RV. Part 1.

I was trying to figure out how to get the G5RV antenna that I bought last weekend at the hamfest (HamEx) up and get on the air with more copper in the air than the current setup (a hustler vertical) allows me,  so I've gotten the following "antenna hoisting" apparatus (homebrewed) up on the side of my house.  It's a TV wall mount bracket and a bit of a homebrew hardware store hoist.  I regret not going with a sturdier single piece of vertical pipe. As it is, I have a bit of a "There I Fixed It" quality of homebrew.   If it fails, it's going to just gently fold in half on me, I hope.   I have wire guys on there that can hold the weight, so I'm pretty sure this won't fall on anyone's head.  

If it stays up for a few weeks, that will be all this arrangement lasts. I think I'll replace the flimsy metal 0.5" conduit with something that is stronger. Perhaps some fibreglass pole.  In the photo here there is no G5RV yet. Just this pole, and some rope, and a pulley, for hoisting things weighing up to 10 pounds, up to 8 feet above the peak of my roof without climbing up on it.

Once the weight is on this flimsy pole, I will adjust and re-true the guy wires, and hopefully it lasts for long enough for me to have some fun before I obtain a better mast.



Update: One week later, the bottom half had bent almost 15 degrees and the whole thing looked like a downrigger.    After I tried to straighten it up with the guy wires I managed to get it bent into a C shape.  Then I took it down.  I also managed to bend the brackets a bit while trying to un-bend the cheap conduit.  Lesson learned? 0.5" conduit is for putting wires inside of, and bolting to a wall, not for building antenna masts with.  Uh, yeah. Shocking, I know.

RTL-SDR Dongle (20 dollars) and HDSDR (Free) : Results are Amazing

I ordered an RTL-SDR dongle from China about 40 days ago. It finally arrived.

I'm listening to the cab companies in Toronto dispatching, around 162 mhz right now.  I can hardly believe how amazing this "scanner", 50 mhz to 1.2 ghz AM, FM, SSB receiver works.

Next month I'm going to build an HF upconvertor and put it in a tiny tin.  That will be fun. I joined the Peel Amateur Radio Club, and they are having a build-it day with RTL-SDR plus HF upconversion board.  Can hardly wait!

My first Hamfest : Peel Region Amateur Radio Club Hamex

I went to my first ham-fest today.  I bought a mag-mount 2m/70cm dual band mobile antenna that I have already attached to my BaoFeng UV-5R, which came with a completely rubbish -280 dB Attenuation rubber-ducky antenna.   I'm only slightly joking, that's probably close to the real figures.

I also bought a G5RV.  I learned that G5RV is the callsign of the amateur who invented this classic multi-band HF wonder.   I began to think on how exactly I plan to put this baby aloft above my QTH. There, look, I'm talking like a ham.    I flat out refuse to use the word "destinate" though. That is not a word, hams, so quit using it like it is.

I met one of the fellows who wrote the Coax Publications study guide that I used to pass my exam; Geoff, wonderful guy, hooked me up a super deal on a soldering station, only $25.  That might have been the best deal I got all day, but here's the thing I'm actually most excited about, you may think I'm silly. I'll just post a picture.


The plan is to make a little Ham Shack call-sign thing with a glowing tube, and everything. What kills me is this is the only tube I saw for sale cheap that came with the socket.

I have a license. I have a radio.  I have not made ANY contacts yet. Zero QSOs.   Also, I did not have a Log Book. You don't need one, but I didn't want to "make my FIRST EVER QSO" and NOT LOG it. You know? So I bought a log book today. I made two entries, one for getting my license, and one for my first hamfest.  My log book is a hobby scrapbook.  While I was doing the Aquarium hobby I wish I had kept a hobby log.  

I signed up for a homebrew "buildathon" day with the Peel Regional club, and I'm very excited about it, it's in April, and we'll be building an HF band SDR based on the RTL-SDR dongle, and an HF upconversion board.   I have had an RTL-SDR dongle on order from China for about a year. Okay, 30 days.  I am a bit eager to get it, and get playing with SDR receivers.

But now that I have a log book, and can make log entries, I plan to start making some QSOs.  On 20 meters, using the mobile HF 20m antenna loaned to me by Carl.   I feel a bit stupid having this radio for several weeks, and being too scared to just get out there and Do Stuff.   But now, I have a log. I can record what I'm doing.

Also, today, I fought with my BaoFeng and figured out how to program in repeater frequencies, offsets, and tones.   Tones, alias CTCSS, alias several other things.  I have no idea if I programmed any of them in properly.  I tried transmitting and asking for help with a radio check, but maybe that's not the right procedure, or maybe everybody scatters when they hear some new guy descend on the repeater with their baofeng, and their lack of seasoned-ham Feng Shui.  Or maybe I'm just imagining it. It does feel like being the new guy in a high school of 800 people.

Tomorrow evening I plan to check in on an FM simplex net, so that should go better than my repeater efforts have.  You can't get the radio configuration wrong on a simplex channel. One hopes, anyways.

Cheap Logitech PC Speakers make a Great 20 Meter SSB Receiver, at least a point-blank range.

I am using a borrowed Kenwood TS-440S, which has 100W power output, when maxed out, but I have been afraid to transmit for fear of blowing up the finals, which are connected to a pretty short mobile antenna.  Nevertheless, the antenna is amazingly well matched at 20 meters (but nowhere else) and after making triple sure I had everything set for low power transmission, I went out, and did the "is this frequency in use?" thing, and then called CQ for the first time ever, not expecting anybody to come back, and nobody did. You see, I had the transmitter dialed down to 5 watts.  And I'm glad I did, because the cheap logitech speakers in my office were rattling like a guitar-amp turned up to eleven. At five watts.  Of course, the transmitting antenna is less than 6 feet away from those speakers, and they have no ferrite chokes anywhere in their design.   I believe this is known as audio-rectification.  If 5 watts does that, then surely audio rectification is going to occur on my home stereo speakers as well, which will be spooky for anybody else in the house.

And, I have a feeling I'm going to get to know my neighbors a little better, if they, like me, all have these cheap logitech speakers on their computers, with about 8 feet of antenna wire, I mean speaker cable, attached to them.   Maybe I'll just go on ebay now and order about 100 ferrite clip on chokes from China.

When I was a kid, I remember this happening because we lived across the streets from VE3ELN, Ernie Reynolds, growing up in London, Ontario.   I thought it was spooky and cool that the console stereo in our living room could have Ernie's duck-like SSB encoded voice coming out our speakers, when the stereo was unplugged from the wall and turned off.

Somehow I think the neighbors will be less impressed.

My first attempt to check in a 2 meter simplex net did not go well.

My only 2 meter radio capability comes from a tiny Baofeng UV-5R which I got from an online seller, shipped directly from China, for about $50.   It has a whopping 5 watts output power, going to a small rubber-ducky providing probably -20 dBi gain.    The net controller was about 7 kilometers from me and could not hear me.  

Well, there you go.  Disappointing.  A better antenna is on a very Slow Boat,  that is on its way from China to me, with a better antenna.

My main interest is HF, but having 2 meter capability seemed like fun, for $50. I guess there's no such thing as a Free (or Cheap) lunch.

A Tale of Two Hams

Once upon a time there were two young people who wanted to get involved in the Amateur Radio Hobby.  We'll call one Fred, and we'll call one Jane.   Both wanted to get on the air and be "Hams", and both wanted to self-study because there was no class available to them.

Fred just wanted to get on the air.  Fred crammed his way through the exam, passed with a score of  81 out of 100,   and he gained full HF band operational privileges, and yet if you asked him to explain anything covered in any of the exams, all he could say was, "that isn't on the exam".    Fred was not quite sure what his interests in the hobby were, but he had a lot of money, and he bought the best gear, and then set it up.  He found the manuals confusing, he found the conversations of other hams unintelligible, and he soon got bored of a hobby that for him, had turned into an exercise in button-mashing, and he soon exited the hobby.  Someone got a deal on a high end transceiver a year or two later.

Jane, on the other hand, wanted to understand what she was doing.  Jane found the study guide she used did not go into enough detail, so Jane went to the library and got out books, and she read and she read. She ordered a small set of electronics parts from eBay, and a breadboard, and learned how resistors and capacitors and transistors work by playing with them.  She wanted to understand electromagnetic waves and their behaviour. She wanted to know how a receiver really works, starting out with understanding how the very first working radio receiver worked, and going through the history of the technology, state by state, until we reach the current day.   Jane also wrote her exam and got 100 out of 100.  If you asked her why the test bothered to make you learn resistor color codes, she would say "Building stuff is fun. How are you going to do that if you don't learn the basics of electronics?".

I don't wish to belittle those who have no desire to learn the underlying technology of their hobby. Who among us can really understand all of it? I certainly can't.

I am simply using Jane and Fred as "symbols" for two sides of my own personality.  One side of me is like Fred; another side is like Jane.  When those two sides come into conflict, one has to win.

So if you are going to self study, I predict that you will meet your own inner Fred and your own inner Jane.  I met mine, when I noticed that I was not going to pass this test if I didn't learn how to answer a lot of questions in this form:

In a frequency modulation transmitter, the _________ is located between the frequency multiplier and the antenna.

A. oscillator B. power amplifier C. modulator
D. speech amplifier

The part of me that was irked that I had to learn "all that" is a Fred.   

 As a learner, I felt I was at a fork in the road, and the two forks in the road had signs on them. I would have to choose which path to walk down, either go to the left, or the right, the two signs were marked thus:

  • Expedience: Learn enough to pass the test, restricting my study to the artificial level created by the legal hurdles in front of me.  Study to the test, without interest in the physical universe beneath it.  Content yourself with the idea that you will come back later and try to understand the concepts later, and decide that not understanding, and not knowing, is better for you.
  • Knowledge is Power: Attempt to understand the physical real world below the concepts and block diagrams, enough that I could use that basis as something to build my enjoyment and understanding of the Amateur Radio hobby on a firm basis.   Scientia Potentia Est.

My own inner Fred chooses expedience, and my own inner Jane chooses knowledge.  I think I will enjoy my hobby pursuits more, in this hobby anyways, if Jane wins out more often than Fred.   Still Fred sticks around.   As I studied, my inner Fred felt annoyed that I had to memorize resistor color codes, Ohm's Law, and the abstract stages that exist in any real receiver or transmitter design.

If you are studying and considering Expedience, ask yourself "How will you suddenly become more motivated when there is no need to do so, to learn something which, if you apply yourself now, may increase your ability to understand and enjoy your chosen hobby, now and long into the future?"

If you just decide to be Fred, will you go the rest of your life without trying to plumb the depths of nature, as Jane has decided to do, or will you have a moment of conversion, and become a Jane later? You decide.  Your call. This is your hobby. Do what you like, new person who is considering this hobby.   Me, I think I'm a little bit of Fred and a little bit of Jane, and there is a bit of a battle on inside my head between them.

But it seems to me that the desire to understand things, and the desire to build things, lies at the root of about 90% of what is fun in the Amateur Radio hobby, for me.   If it is not the same for you, perhaps you have no inner fred, and no inner Jane, but are an entirely different person.  I can easily see how someone who is completely not a "geek" or into the technology could become a very effective radio operator, and have a lot of fun. They could specialize in helping people, in organizing and using the power of the whole community working together, to do amazing things.  There are many ways to have fun in this hobby without being Jane,  but my point is, that I don't think Fred is going to have much fun, or be much good to anybody.  So if you're neither Fred nor Jane, please don't think I'm slamming you if you're not "into" the technology side of this hobby.  I respect ANYBODY who wants to get into this hobby, and I don't need to know why you want to. I just want to share what it felt like for me.

 This blog will be based on a firm notion that the path of Knowledge is the right path for me, and that, for me at least, if I stop being Jane, I start being Fred again, and I do not want to be Fred.  Fred is a button-masher, a "lid", and a not-very-fun guy to hang out with.  Thus, I present the motto of my blog:

Scientia Potentia Est

So given that I wish to understand things, and know things, and thus, be able to do things, I have some suggestions for people like me, who are using the fantastic Study Guide for Canadian amateurs, made by great people who I earnestly respect, at Coax Publications.

In my opinion, they did a great job of trying to balance between those who want to learn technology (me) and those who want to pass the test and get on with their chosen interests in the hobby.

You can't write one book and make it perfect for every learner, and I certainly know that I'm not the average learner in any way.   So for me, and for my learning style, I feel that certain modifications (in my own study practices) are very helpful.  If you recognize that you are like me, you might find these help you too.  If they don't, don't worry.

Rule 1: I Love to Diagram All The Things, and Make Pretty Pictures

 Where possible I think it is better to draw an antenna that looks like an antenna, and draw a speaker that looks like a speaker.   However, what does a mixer or an intermediate frequency amplifier look like?  How am I to keep an RFO and a VFO mentally separated?

 If something is an amplifier or a mixer, I think it is better to learn the symbols used in the field, and use them.  Symbols, and glyphs and variables (I for current) have important symbolic power, and are part of the way that your brain (and mine) organizes, understands, and processes abstractions.

If there is a symbol for something, like a mixer, use it when you hand-draw your own versions of the block diagrams in the study guide. For me, nothing beats writing out that which you want to learn, in your own way, and with your own notation and conventions where convenient, and where you also include as many conventions and notations as you are aware of being used in the Real World.   Here is a symbol for a Mixer:


Now, my job of memorizing the block diagram just got easier. That visual symbol is laid out so that some information goes into this stage (the left side), and goes out of the stage (on the right side) and requires some supporting information (the up arrow from below).  The general flow of my block diagrams is always from left to right, and the stages that receive some intermediate form of information that is less processed in the desired manner (receiving a radio wave and turning it into sound, by stages) proceeds towards a more processed state, as I move from left to right.   Things which do not have an input and are only outputs, like a local oscillator, are mentally kept separate in my head while I learn, from the things that have both inputs and outputs.     Things which I am learning the purpose of must have distinguishing characteristics.

The authors of my study guide did a pretty great job of trying to explain each of the stages, but I found I struggled with this part, and was unable to even formulate any questions like "I'm not able to understand all the stages, and why I'm learning this".   I sat there and was mad at the designers of this test, for making me learn this.  Then I had a bit of an "a-ha!" moment:

If you want to play with radio transmitters and receivers, why are not not learning how they work?


I re-committed myself to the idea of understanding what I'm doing, and rejected the mental voice of expedience that I had previously been entertaining subconsciously.


Rule 2:  I Love Abstractions.  I Learn Best when I Collect Them And Understand Them.

I initially found myself annoyed at the people who decided that in equations we should use E for the voltage, instead of V.  Why was I annoyed? Why was I confused?  Why do some presentations of Ohm's law say "V = I * R" and some say "E = I * R".  What is the E?   It's a little piece of the history of science, dear friend.  Don't try to be so modern that you can't understand the past. That's my advice.
I started to see that understanding differences in notation and being able to read all of them, meant I was learning notations and abstractions. This is an important part of learning to communicate about technical subjects with other amateurs, and is the beginning of growing your mental capacity to read technical work and try to understand it.  Don't give up.

There is a reason for separating and understanding the use of the variable (E) the unit (Volts) and the physics concept (Electro Motive Force or EMF).  If some people write Ohm's law with a V and some write it with an E, you can probably handle both sides.  If you understand what is being expressed, and the history of the various ways of saying things, you will find they start making sense.

In the early days they said "Megacycles" and these days it's "Megahertz". If you can understand and follow along, you can read the old articles and the new ones, and glean much from both.  Know both.

There are old abstractions, perhaps dusty and discarded.  Understand their place in history of your technology and your hobby. There are shiny modern forms.  Know both.

Abstractions like the notion of Current and Voltage are analogues to real physical processes involving the real physical universe, but are abstractions because they represent a simplification of what are, at the bottom level of our current understanding, phenomenon that are results of quantum laws.   I suspect, but I do not know for sure, that the quantum laws we now know are but abstractions, which will  later be replaced by even lower-level physical observations than those we now observe at the quantum level.  I think it is possible that in 300 years people might have some new stuff in the introductory electronics textbooks.  Progress marches on.  

I have some sympathy for history, for explorers, and discoverers.   There are two kinds of "Current" flow directions used in basic textbooks about electronics. As a new learner, this kind of complexity may throw you for a loop, discourage you, and confuse you.  I know I found it confusing when I first tried to learn some electrical and electronics concepts.  I think a sensitive introduction to a subject, for a new learner like me, who is a techie and a history buff, needs a large dose of history.

Much has been said about Ben Franklin being "wrong". In some sense, yes, these early pioneers were "wrong". If one posits the electron's existence, and its direction of flow, and then later finds out that reality is otherwise, then, yes, the scientific and sensible thing to do is to say, "you're wrong".

The part of my that is by nature a historian, an observer of truth unfolding over time, is that I think it is anachronistic and obscures the truth of history to simply say "they were wrong".  They were, precisely, choosing a path because a choice of path was required, and in the absence of evidence to the contrary, chose what seemed a perfectly reasonable notation and convention at the time.

Personally, my goal is to understand the value of both the simple literal physical realities we observe, and the abstractions we build on top, and the history of how we got where we are right now.  I notice that some text-book writers share my preference, and some do not.  I happen to need to know the various bends in the road, the various discoveries, the various controversies, or disagreements, the famous experiments, and the ways by which we learned that which we now proclaim as "fact" to people who can not understand how we got there.

So I do not think  "conventional" current is wrong. It is a valuable abstraction.  History is good to know.  We are throwing a wrench in the works if we only state "it was wrong, now fix it", and then try to erase the "wrong" information.   Instead, what we need to do is understand the history of "how we got here", and include the now-discarded initial wrong hypothesis in our study, or we will remain confused forever.

I suspect that the whole electrical engineering world is on a swing towards the "rewrite everything" and "simplify and erase history" mode, and that in the Amateur Hobby at least, important books like the 2014 ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook have resisted this tendency and are trying to stay the course of traditional engineering discipline and notions.  The fact that one should state one's conventions and then stick with them creates an important and useful way of working with complex matters like electricity, electronics, and fundamental physical reality.

For example, when we define a capacitor, or an antenna, we can choose to think mentally of a perfect capacitor, or some ideal or abstract source of radio waves.  This is useful precisely because we can have one equation model everything we need to model about this not-real capacitor and this not-real antenna.  Then we can describe all the real capacitors and antennas and compare them to the real ones, and thus to each other.

Abstractions are great.  Formulas and rules, and so on, are great. They allow us to organize and understand how the world works, and then provide a baseline for comparison so we can determine the causes (and corrections) of things which do not fit with our abstractions.

Rule 3: When your brain is full, stop.

The most useful thing I learned during my study was to let myself take a break, and not study any more for two days, or three days, if my brain gets full.  When my brain gets full, I get frustrated, I get confused, I can't think straight. My brain isn't capable of absorbing massive amounts of information at all times of the day and the night.

If you don't, feel free to ignore them.  This is your hobby.  If you know how to get where you want to go, and you know how to have fun, please don't let me tell you want to do.

I passed my test, and got my callsign. Hello from VE3WPX

My name is Warren, and I am a Canadian, who recently decided to do a self-study and get my Amateur Radio operator certificate.     I don't think I'm allowed to "go on the air" until I get the paper certificate in the mail, but I decided to create this new blog right away.

I think I will try to collect information here of interest to novice Canadian Amateur Radio operators like myself, and those who, like myself, could not find an active training class, and might like some help with self study.

Here is a quick synopsis of what I did and the time I took to do self study:

1.  I got the Canadian Amateur Radio Basic Qualification Study Guidebook from Coax Publications, I read about a chapter a day on the first go through, without taking any notes, or stopping to do exercises. My personal learning style is to gather a survey level introduction.   That took me about two weeks.

2.  I then went back and read each chapter in a detailed "study" mode. In study mode, I made some notes, particularly I drew diagrams where I felt it would help me visualize things.   There are a lot of questions on the test about what component comes before and after components X and Y in an object of type Z, where Z is something like an FM Radio Transmitter, or an FM Radio Receiver, or an SSB Radio Transmitter, or an SSB Radio Receiver.   I felt that the diagrams helped a lot.

3. I made flash-cards on 3.5" index cards, for facts like:

  • The names of bands, the start and end frequencies, and the bandwidths and modes permitted.
  • Resistor color codes (You could really learn this in the same amount of effort it takes to memorize the 10 or so possible ones that could come up in the actual test, I feel quite passionately that one should really learn something useful and not just learn enough to pass the test)
  • Formulas for things like Reactance, or Ohms Law
  • Label the various pins on components like diodes, transistors, FETs, and tube triodes, and then not only memorize the question answers, but really try to understand how diodes, transistors, fets, resistors, capacitors, etc, actually work.
4. Because I'm interested in knowing a bit more than the study materials covered, I ordered a few more books online, and got some books out of the library, which I started reading even before I wrote the test, because I wanted to know more than a book like the CARBQSG could cover.

  • I got the ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook from an online book seller.
  • I got some books on fundamental electronics out of the library.
5. When I was confused, some nice hams helped me out. I used some local club message boards, and some email contacts to ask other hams for help. They were fantastic, especially the nice people who published the book I bought.  I highly recommend this book, not only because it's a good way to prepare for the test, but also because the folks who published it really care about helping new hams out.

6. I used the practice exams on the Industry Canada site, and the practice exams on the Coax Publications site, but neither one was as handy to me as the practice exam iPhone app "Ham Basic", which I used every day on the way to work while I was on the bus, and every night on the way home. This got me through the "drilling multiple choice questions".  Before I wrote the test, I wanted to have read and answered EVERY question in the question bank correctly at least once if not more often than that, and achieved at least a 90 (out of 100) on the practice exams.  After I got to that point, I contacted someone from the IC list of accredited examiners, and took the test.  The fellow who helped me take my test took time out of his busy day to spend an hour with me, and administer the test.

I am very glad I got started and did the self-study method. As soon as my certificate arrives in the mail, I can go on the air.

I attended a local Amateur Radio club meeting, and met some other folks who were waiting for their club's new-ham-training classes to start.    There is a nice social element to having a class to go to, but if you're eager to get on the air (I know I am), and you don't want to wait until there's a class you can go to, just buy a book and get started.

I'd like to say a quick thank-you to Carl, and Geoffrey, and Prem, three wonderful experienced Radio Amateurs who have each in their own way gone out of their way to be helpful and kind to me, and have been instrumental in helping me get started.  I think I might have a bit more to say about Carl, as he really has been incredibly kind to me, but I think I'll save that for another post.
